Cabinet Monday Night Meeting
30 September 2013
Meeting Start: 9:01
People should WANT to come to the ASG General Meetings
Gonna go over the tentative agenda and make changes
SO YOU SHOULN'T BE ASKING QUESTIONS DURING SENATE
Make sure everybody on Senate can speak before you!
We want to take as much time off of that meeting so that it's not so jumbled
Larry →
If it falls under student affairs, and Kush and Sarah have something specific to ask him that's related to
their work, that's find to ask.
But there should be no questions that come out of left field.
Kevin
→ No more out of the blue comments during the Senate Meetings
→ This concerns agenda requests
Aurora
→ I think we need to enforce this policy
Brogan
→ So we are trying to keep the meeting under an hour?
Kevin
→ This is a goal
Brogan
→ Concerned that people will start to tune out if the meetings to come to two hours long
Kevin
→ We should be able to streamline discussion
→ Nobody wants to sit in a meeting for two hours
Larry
→ In a few more weeks, we're going to know how long meetings are going to be
→ For example, the meeting tomorrow should be about 50 minutes long
Kevin
→ Goal is to get everything done in the committee minutes and do presentations
Going Through the Agenda
Finance
Cabinet Reports
Katie
→ Katie has a committee
(Somebody might bring up something from last week, recommend that Katie invites them to speak to
her after the meeting and/or come to the committee meeting.)
Jake
→ Community Service
→ Can double count
→ Need at least 5 hours of community service, doesn't matter who its for
Aurora
→ Approval of clubs
(Brogan's Update: Ed wanted to formally apologize for laughing during the question about females
playing on the lax team. He just wanted to point out that while we do have a female's varsity team,
females are more than likely to play. Also wanted to point out that
→ Bill Ross stuff
Kushtrim
→ Student Affairs
→ Parkhurst
→ Lance, Freshman VP will give the reports
→ Met with P, dealt with minor issues such as the ranch being too spicy, gluten issues (people who are
gluten-free by choice and not by force are a problem)
→ Token system for Brooks boxes (has a 60% success rate, opposed to our 97% interest rate)
→ Big Brooks plastic containers are going to stay
→ Attendance rates for SA meetings are getting better!
(Brogan Questions)
→ Any discussion about people getting to go from Brooks?
They didn't talk about statistics, but they said it was going well
→ Garrett's Question about the plastic containers
They are recyclable!
You CAN get a compostable take out container
Sarah Naughton Interjects
→ The token system didn't work for the other school because that school was all cash-run, not like
Brooks
→ If we bring complaints, I want to bring a solution!
→ We can propose that classes discuss how they want a token system to work. Parkhurst is not
opposed to a token system, but they want to make sure that it works.
(Brogan)
→ Can we have multiple drop off locations for these?
→ One issue that we're facing with our committee is that these people work in the service industry. We
need to be respectful of them. We are BLESSED to have Parkhurst
→ We need to have people give COMPLIMENT SANDWICHES
→ Cliff is out of town
→ Jeff Schneider is “pressing on” with
Larry
→ The three people from last week will be coming back
→ Emailed them apologies
→ Don't anticipate anything happening, but if it does, will leave
→ Curriculum Committee people will be coming too
(Brogan)
→ Respect Larry's ability to choose these people
→ There's going to be the public events committee
→ Going through that one still
Announcements
→ Jake, Bob Goff is at 8
→ Aurora
→ Grace, Women's week events
Sloane
→ Senator of the Month? How will we handle this?
Garrett
→ Add to the reports
Sloane
→ We can decide as a cabinet or we can set up something
→ Later, have the Senate vote on it
→ Open ballot?
→ We would present the Senator of the Month tomorrow
(Sarah)
→ We used to rig this during senate meetings
→ It might be better if Cabinet does it
(Larry)
→ It might be better if PR does it
(Brogan)
→ Can we nominate people and then vote?
(Kevin)
→ We can just vote
→ We can talk about it during this meeting
(Sloane)
→ This can be finalized during the newsletter time
(Kevin)
→ Do you want a Cabinet/Committee Report?
(Slonae)
→ Not sure
(Kevin)
→ Sure. Larry, give her a report.
→ We're going to vote on the Senator of the Month right now, and it will be in the newsletter for the
next month
→ Thinking about Shep
→ He's being very reliable during office hours
→ Running the Jr. Class like a boss
→ Workshop tomorrow, teaching people how to apply to college
(Sarah)
→ Lance came to our first meeting even though we didn't tell him to come
→ He's really passionate and adorable
Skylar
→ Alexis Nielson is really big about learning the precedents
Aurora
→ Sam is an amazing senator
→ Comes to meeting, reads the constitutions, edits + color codes, sends to Aurora
(VOTING)
→ Shep is the Senator of the Month
Kevin
→ Office Hours
→ If you don't have anything to do during your office hours, Kevin will give you a todo list!
(Jake)
→ Running todo list?
Kevin
→ Food for tomorrow's meeting?
→ What do you want?
Grace
→ GRACE IS SO EXPENSIVE
Sarah
→ Winter Veggies?
Katie
→ Chipper's?
Kevin
→ Never mind, I'll figure it out!
Brogan, to Garrett
→ October Energy Month!
→ How is this happening?
Garrett + Kevin
→ October 22nd
→ Going to FLOOD THE DORMS with fliers
→ October 7th
Kevin
→ Lee and Alexis have brought up different resolutions
Aurora - Lee's Resolution
→ Had proposed the idea of including a clause to suggest to the organization of an executive board to
suggest going through Safe Zone Training
→ Wanted Aurora to give it to the next committee meeting
→ However, Rules Committee members need to know about these things
→ Rules proposed other things because there might be better ways to go about this
→ This is still pending information
→ You will not get money
Katie
→ This is different than his incentivizing thing
Aurora
→ Hopefully, when we meeting with him, we'll know his complete goal
Grace
→ This would kill our general fund
Katie
→ We was going to cap it, ie only 30 clubs can do it
Grace
→ This takes away some of the budgeting
, meeting in the dark
to November 3rd
→ It's not responsible to just give away $100 for getting Safe Zone or some other bystander or some
other kind of training
Sarah
→ Valerie doesn't want people to feel like they're being forced to come
→ We shouldn't be forcing people to come to something that they should be going to anyway
Kevin
→ Aurora's Committee should just working PR ing the Safe Zones more often
Aurora
→ Will keep you guys updated!
→ Cabinet should be there!
Brogan
→ Questioning the sustainability of this
→ The incoming freshmen had to go a meeting during orientation that basically covers what Safe Zone
I covers
Aurora
→ There are just so many things that we don't know, and we have to consider all of these things
Brogan
→ We might not have to worry about it in Finance in a year or two from now
→ It's not going to be a long issue where we're still losing $10,000 from the General Fund
Aurora
→ It's gonna roll because you'll always have a new Exec.
Kevin
→ So Basically, we're going to have a meeting this week, come if you want
Katie
→ My committee is behind this!
→ It's just about encouraging clubs to make a committeement to coming to these trainings!
Aurora
→ Rules is not against this, but we have maybe more effective ways
Kevin
→ Alexis has been going to meetings about Fracking!
Garrett
→ Bousson Advisory Group is forming a comprehensive document
→ Garrett will be going over it
→ Included in that is an ASG statement
→ What else is Alexis's document going to bring to the table?
→ Personally, a document from the Bousson Advisory Group is going to bring more to Senate than
what she has
Sarah
→ So what exactly is her initiative?
Kevin
→ She just wants to get ASG to say that we don't support fracking
Garrett
→ The BAG document would just simply state
Sarah
→ There's the issue that she's kind of wasting time
Brogan
→ What is the larger picture of what Alexis is going?
→ Trying to get each class to realize that there's a process of getting this documentation
→ What Alexis is trying to do is make the classes realize that there is a process behind the student
voice, and not so much about the actuality of the Bousson
Aurora
→ So actually, Tyler Gund wrote a letter about ASG's stance
Kevin
→ Brogan's point is just that we can be more formal and organized with our initiatives
→ What our current problem is: we have a communication issue in ASG
→ Senators and constituents don't know who to talk to
→ If people knew who to talk to, we wouldn't be in this Cabinet meeting for an hour
→ If Alexis had already talked to Garrett, she would know that there's already a HUGE DOCUMENT
THAT'S GOING STRAIGHT TO THE TRUSTEES and it wouldn't be in the Senate or class meetings
→ We need to be more transparent to the senators and to students
→ THEY NEED TO KNOW THAT THEY CAN COME TO US WITH THESE THINGS
→ If we just work together, we can get stuff done so much faster!
Sarah
→ Add an FAQ outside the office or to the website?
Katie
→ By Alexis going to Garrett, she might have been discouraged
→ What Alexis is doing is more central to what students want
Kevin
→ Don't want to discourage them, just want them to know that these things are already happening
Garrett
→ I think there is a bit of disconnect between me and Alexis
Sarah
→ The phone works both ways
Grace
→ In this situation, it's unnecessary
→ We have people involved, but they're different people
→ However, we should be making formal resolutions
Brogan
→ From speaking to Alexis, her intention is that we not forget about it this year
→ Wants to make sure that the new senators have an understanding of why this is important
→ We need to establish this bridge of communication so that we don't shut people down
Jake
→ We can't tell people what to do or what not to do
→ We can recommend stuff, but we can't make decisions
Aurora
→ It's all about establishing transparency
Brogan
→ Let me clarify
→ That bridge of communication needs to be defined for it to work correctly
Sarah
→ Are we being overly sensitive about using the word “discourage”?
Kevin
→ As much as I would love for people to go in different directions, this brings us back to the
discussion about the Pre-Health Club
→ We need to consolidate our resources
Jake
→ Moving to end discussion
Larry
→ Final thought: We can be cocreators
Kevin
→ We're also in these positions for a reason
Meeting End: 10:06
