ASG General Meeting X
05 November 2013
Meeting Start: 7:00
Larry introduces President Mullen
Mullen
Ë Personally, glad to see many of you here
Ë Thanks for the leadership that you’re showing
Ë Special moment:
Ë Calling out Lee Scandiarno; was in Erie and he was asked to speak; hardest act to follow
Ë We’re coming up on the bicentennial
Ë It’s important for us to step back and think about what that means
Ë This college is almost as old as the United States itself
Ë His office has a letter from Thomas Jefferson to Timothy Alden
Ë Even those of you who are graduating, we all have two responsibilities
Ë 1. Steward the institution
Ë It’s a place where students want to come and want to succeed
Ë We have strong enrollment, a comprehensive capitol campaign to raise the endowment of
the college, and we’re on a good track
Ë The college is healthy
Ë 2. We get the chance, because we’re the 32nd
special
Ë We can say: Let’s define something that is meaningful for all of higher education, for all
of liberal arts education
Ë This isn’t just a good, regional college; this is a national and increasingly international
institution for students
Ë When you’re that, you must define what the best is
Ë This is why we‘re trying to define the Gateway
Ë Trying to answer a fundamental question: what should a student expect from the best
liberal arts college in the nation?
Ë Expand internship opportunities; expand study away opportunities; expand civic
engagement
Ë When you have 2100 students performing 16.000 hours of service…that’s amazing
Ë How do you leave our legacy for all of higher education to follow the best liberal arts
college in the country?
Ë Study away, recruitment, internships, living learning communities, diversity initiatives, to
understand what’s it’s like to live with and respect all of those who live with us
Ë Environmental sustainability in our very complex world
Ë What I need your help on is; how do we best do that together?
oldest college, to do something really
Ë How do we make sure our work is communicating in a way that is making sure our work
is moving together
Ë Talked to the AEC: The Administrative Executive Council
Ë Would like for the President and Vice President of Student Government come to meet
with AEC
Ë Would love for all of the presidents and vice presidents all of the presidents and vice
presidents of the college should meet together
Ë We don’t want to not know what each other is doing, because we’re all doing important
stuff
Ë How do we find those mechanisms?
Ë I need to hear your voice, and I do, but I hear it more informally
Ë I am on the road now, almost continuously
Ë Was asked to be the vice chair of the Council on Education
Ë I need student contact; I wander because I need to talk to you
Ë Want to talk to everyone about finding ways to meet with students in small groups
Ë It would be very meaningful to me
Ë Finally: We’re about being a place that focuses on civility and it focuses on how we treat
each other
Ë I sometimes know that all of us, when we cross the street, we tend not to say thank you
Ë I would love to start something where we’re going to be model civilians and we’re going
to say thank-you to every car that stops
Ë Sometimes I hear from the community that we have wonderful students, but when they
cross the street, they bow their heads down and go on their way
Ë IT would be a marvelous way to show the community we care
Ë It’s one more way of connecting to this community
Ë We’ve got a moment that we can run with
Eric -> It’s wonderful that you actually take the time to get to know your students
Mullen -> I really do get more about it than you imagine
Ë If there’s a student, a friend of yours whose feeling down or homesick, just visit my
house or
Ë I can’t imagine how anybody could be in a small college and not want that
Rose -> MY friends think that its really awesome that you run into students in the mornings in
McKins and buy them their breakfast
Leanne -> Can you tell us a bit about what you’ve been doing and where you’ve been going?
Mullen -> My travels this semester, a lot of DC
Ë Conversation now about civility
Ë In that meeting, we have an opportunity to talk about the civility award
Ë Hoping to encourage all of you who are natural leaders to seek elected office after you
leave Allegheny
Ë Was in Florida a few days ago with alumni
Ë Meeting with a lot of alumni and are now just starting to reengage
Ë Was in New York for a meeting with some Wall Street individuals
Ë Will be in Cleveland tomorrow
Ë Columbus next week
Ë Washington again, then out West for some meetings, so please help me stay connected
Quinn -> How does the administration make their decisions? How does the Board of Trustees
interface with the AEC and you and how do you see student opinion as a functioning input to all
of that?
Mullen
Ë From a purely logistical and organizational point of view, the Board of Trustees meets
three times a year; October and April on campus, February, retreat in Pittsburgh
Ë IS a member of the board, also reports to the Board
Ë Board hires and can relieve the president
Ë Takes on more of a strategic than operational view
Ë Set force strategies and visions; organization implements them
Ë That’s kind of how it works
Ë WE have committees and the executive committee
Ë Finance Committee
Ë Academic and Student Life Committee
Ë We’ve been thinking about separating those because of the agenda is so large
Ë There is a development committee; focuses on raising money; alumni relations
Ë Invest Committee, focuses on the investments of the college
Ë When the board is here, we create as many opportunities for the Board to engage with
students as possible
Ë Dialogue with Student Affairs
Ë Board wants to hear the student voice
Ë How do we make sure that you’re best hearing with the Board is focusing on and vice
versa?
Ë Do we break Academic and Student Life into two committees again?
Ë That’s a decision that we should make together
Ë They want as much student time as they can get
Ë IF there are better ways of bringing that voice forward, we should talk about that
Yemi -> How do you think we can do for the bicentennial?
Ë You’re going to be taking forth the momentum of the bicentennial
Ë It’s one thing to celebrate the bicentennial, but its another to carry forward
Ë We’ve got HUGE momentum
Ë There are conversations going on about Allegheny everywhere in the country
Ë It’s pretty impressive when you’re one of the top 10 up-and-coming colleges in the
country
Ë (US News does their rankings based on the college’s impact on the world)
Ë Why is Amherst always top in the nation? Because they tell everybody about it!
Ë WE need to be ready to do that!
Kevin -> Thanks!
Larry -> IF you have anything tell him, just stop by his office

Ë Met with the Wellness Committee
Ë Student Life is the representatives of the wellness committee
Ë Committee used to typically be just administrators
Ë Bill Ross was there today
Ë He was talking about a survey about the Wise Center; had over 600 students take that
survey
Ë He talked about Wellness in terms of Athletics
Ë We decided most of the time wellness on this campus is focused around a few major
areas; alcohol, drugs, stress, sleep, bystander trainings, sexual assault prevention
Ë Today we focused on how we want to bring back the Be That Gator campaign
Ë How can we be the kind of person you want on campus?
Ë What kind of programming should we bring on campus?
Ë Bystander Training and Sexual Abuse related
Ë Become more aware about programming
Ë Planning on plastering the Be That Gator, what does it mean? Stickers, magnets, and
handing those out
Ë What kind of programming are we looking for?
Ë IF you have any questions about Wellness, let us know!
Elizabeth Donaldson -> Bystander Training was a really exciting thing that they started last year,
and it feels like it totally fizzled out. Do you guys have any information about what direction
that’s going in?
Sarah -> Just did one on Gator Day, Jacquie is really hopeful to be doing more
Marlys -> I think that PR needs to be better on those; for those who don’t know, the bystander
effect is when something bad happens and nobody does anything because they assume somebody
else has done it
Gretchen Symons -> We actually have trainings every Tuesdays and Wednesdays; came about
as a grant; this year it’s opened up a bit more on campus, teams and organizations; general
approaches with general trainings that pretty much anybody can go to
Sarah -> That’s what we focused on in the meeting; just PR; will try to help Jacquie out with
ways to get more students involved
Tim -> Did the committee and Jacquie discuss the changes to the colleges sexual violence
policy?
Sarah -> Today was more of a preliminary meeting; you can go talk to her about it; the changes
aren’t final yet
Gretchen -> One of Jacquie’s requirements in the Spring is that she does it with ASG; the college
is required to go through those policies every two or three years
Sarah -> She’s also working on Title IX
Rose -> To add to the PR, she was talking about how she was all of these brochures and she
tables; and we were being realistic with her and telling her that those brochures may be great, but
people won’t read them, and we told her that it would be better if she brought in a speaker
Kush -> The next thing was James Fadden and Computer Services; last time we talked about
changing cable to better and faster Internet
Ë We emailed him and he emailed us a lot back
Ë HE’s been going through the Residence Life lounges
Ë HE wants out committee to gather information
Ë They’ve improved the AC-Wireless and will try to get Skype to work better
Ë Will be sending minutes/meeting times to Jake; he will send them to you, and you can
send them out to your constituents
Ë Unofficial Meeting next Friday at 12:30
Sarah
Ë Direct complaints from students; CC AC-Wireless
Ë They rerouted access points
Ë Since this is a high-access point, peoples phones are always picking up access points
Ë So it’ll be easier to connect
Ë They’ve connect bandwidth to 500MB, and we have traffic slightly above 400MB
Ë IF you have anything you’d like to ask about, come to our meetings!
