Bicentennial Meeting

November 1, 2013

Committee members present: Tim Cooper, Tricha Gregor, Chet Sceiford, Keri Fadden, Alex Neal, Larry Hailsham, Cliff Willis, Lindy Jackson, Linda Wetsell, Jed Miller, Kelly Boulton, Ruth Andel, Jesse Lavery, Kevin Crooks,  Rebecca Wiler.

Agenda passed out to attendees. Tim Cooper presented agenda for discussion:

  1. Bicentennial Celebration itinerary during Homecoming Weekend

  • Collaboration with student organizations

  • Trustee meeting has been moved to this weekend

  • Ribbon cutting on Friday at Plaza

  • Reached out to ABC

  • Secure Church choirs through association with the College to sing during ceremony

  • Possibly have alumni to join I singing with choir

  • Possible speakers: Governor Corbet, Congressman Kelly, Mayor of Meadville, Rob Smith, student representative, faculty representative, President Mullen

  • Entertainment to be Allegheny centric and possibly include Credit/No Credit with guest players such as Dave McInally

  • Dance in Schultz Banquet Hall with a DJ

  • Saturday reception on the plaza not a student event – wine, beer for adults

  • Saturday reception – possibly move a piano to the plaza for Alec Chien to play

All committee members agreed that the plans for this celebration are appropriate.

  1. Merchandise

  • Tim Cooper showed samples of merchandise – polo shirt, pullover shirt, stuffed gator, stationary

  • Merchandise will be in bookstore before Christmas of this year

  1. Banners

  • Route through town and to campus shown to members

  • Banner hanging has been approved by the city – Cliff has negotiated costs with the city and a trade of services

  • Displays / samples of different materials to be used for the banners – heavier material used for Smock Bridge banners while medium weight used through route in town

  • Smaller banners will be on campus

  • Some extra banners will be ordered in case  replacement of a damaged banner is necessary

  • Banners will most likely be up from August 1 2014 through calendar year 2015

  • Banners may be auctioned off after they are taken down

 

  1. Plaza construction

  • Pattern of platform redesigned to give visual cues / outline areas where stage and chairs will be placed

  • Blue stone added to continue theme found by Bentley and the east side of Tippie

  • Added curvature of stone pattern on plaze

  • Wall facing Schultz will be either brick or stone

  • Costs of brick and stone discussed

  • Discussion of details such as fencing, pillars

  • Electrical outlets will be in the pillars

  • Much discussion among members of this new plaza stone design

Committee members had varying opinions on the plaza stone design

  1. Speaker Series

  • The series gets underway this year

  • Short list being developed for next year

  • Contracts to be sent in spring semester if possible

 

  1. Plaques

  • Tim Cooper showed an example of the plaques

  • 17”  x  17” size

  • 40 plaques

  • Discussion of where to place plaques along sidewalk

  • Most likely the plaques will be placed on both sides of the east sidewalk leading down/South from Bentley towards Schultz.

  • The west sidewalk will be left without plaques so it that space will be available for future plaques
